I am a huge proponent of recognizing another’s achievements or accomplishments. I think this is one of the easiest things we can do to honor another person. To say thanks for a job well done, to pat some on the back (figuratively or literally), to be appreciative – all of these things are valuable to the other person. But just as valuable to me. The other person knows not only that what they did was worthy of attention, but that the other person really understood their specific contribution.

I am fond of doing this in all sorts of different ways. There are the tried and true, such as thank you cards, letting someone leave early, giving extra vacation time, gift cards of their preference. But I also like to do silly things to show how much I appreciate someone. I have given away Gumby dolls to a project team to let them know how much I truly valued their flexibility during a crazy implementation. Ultimately, it matters less how you show your thanks, it matters more that you do (unless you do it with a complete lack of caring, then it will backfire no matter what you do). Have you told someone thanks today?
